... a good old-fashioned picnic.
So yesterday, after church, we filled our picnic basket to the point of overflowing and headed outside. Unfortunately it's not quite nice enough yet to hit the pool or beach....... So we're patiently waiting and trying to make the most of the weather we have been having -- which has been very unremarkable so far this summer.
Here are a few pictures from our picnic -- since we only ventured as far as our backyard, our cats even got to join us. :)
This was the FIRST time we used our picnic basket (after almost 4 years of marriage), and I had forgotten how neat it was -- coming with utensils and cloth napkins.
(By the way -- hope you like the new, larger picture size! took me forever to finally figure it out -- this blog thing is trickier than it looks!)

best friends :)
Lucy's feeling so much better after her surgery! So thankful for amazing veterinarians who treat our animals with such great care, and to God for watching out for these special members of our family.
For the record, they LOVE their leashes. As long as THEY are in charge. We don't go for... walks. We sit in the backyard and watch the birds fly by. Works perfectly for me -- I just sit there and read my book and soak up the sun while they do their thing. They do walk around and explore -- but at their own speed -- they'll take a few steps, and then plop down in the grass. Our neighbor has 3+ bird feeders and we have a birds' nest under our deck -- both of which provide endless hours of entertainment.
How do I know they love it? They get SO mad and fight me when it's time to go inside. When we first started taking them outside, it was hard to get their harnesses on because they would wiggle around so much ---- now that they know that they're going to get to go outside they lay by the door and purr when they see us get the leashes and harnesses out.
We originally intended to venture to a nearby state park for our picnic -- but ya know, our backyard worked out so much better. First of all, all the food I wanted to take didn't even CLOSE to fit in our (fairly large) picnic basket. Also, it was so handy to be seconds away from our house if we wanted to grab some water or bug spray or something we forgot the first time around. And clean-up was so easy. For walks, I much prefer a scenic park -- but for eating, this worked just as well.
We had a great weekend, and I hope you did too. We are excited to take our first trip of the summer to Okoboji with Preston's family this coming weekend. We're hopefully heading up Friday morning and staying until Sunday morning. The weather forecast for Saturday looks iffy -- but I'm praying extra hard this week for nice weather so that we can lay by the pool and go out on the boat.
Some of our best memories last summer were spent in Okoboji with Preston's family, so Friday can't come soon enough!
Until then... Happy Monday! The Bachelorette is on at 7pm -- definitely can't-miss television in my book. Now I'm headed outside to enjoy the beautiful sunny day -- I'm going to water my garden and then go for a nice, long walk. I hope you're able to enjoy the sun today!
Love and prayers that you have a good week,
Emily
